Frequently Asked Questions

Plug-in cabinets (also called integral or self-contained units) have the compressor and condensing unit built into the cabinet itself. You just plug them into a standard power outlet — no external plumbing or refrigerant lines needed. They’re common for drinks fridges, small display fridges, and standalone freezers.

Remote cabinets are connected to a separate, external condensing unit (often located on a roof, in a plant room, or in a dedicated mechanical space). The compressor sits away from the cabinet and refrigerant lines run between the two. Remote systems are typical in supermarkets, larger retail fit-outs, and multi-cabinet installations.

In short: plug-in = self-contained, simple install, easy to relocate. Remote = split system, more efficient at scale, requires professional design and installation.

Plug-in cabinets
  • Benefits: Lower upfront cost, fast and simple installation (no refrigerant lines or plant room needed), easy to relocate or reposition if your layout changes, no need for a dedicated mechanical space.
  • Tradeoffs: Generally less energy-efficient than remote systems, the compressor noise and heat output sit inside the space (near customers or staff), not eligible for energy efficiency rebates, and servicing/replacing a unit affects that cabinet in isolation rather than as part of a coordinated system.
Remote systems
  • Benefits: More energy-efficient at scale, no compressor noise or heat inside the retail or work area, can run multiple cabinets off a single condensing unit, eligible for state energy efficiency rebates (when GEMS-listed), and generally more durable for continuous, heavy-use environments.
  • Tradeoffs: Higher upfront cost, requires professional design and installation (refrigerant line runs, condensing unit placement), needs a suitable external or plant room location, and repairs typically require a qualified technician rather than a simple swap.
Which is right for you? Plug-in units suit smaller footprints, single cabinets, or businesses wanting flexibility and lower upfront spend. Remote systems suit businesses with multiple cabinets, higher throughput, or where long-term running costs and rebate eligibility matter more than upfront price. We can assess your site and talk you through which makes sense.

Only remote refrigeration cabinets are currently eligible for rebates under state energy efficiency schemes. Plug-in units are not eligible. If accessing a rebate is a priority for your upgrade, a remote system is the path to take.

All Stratton Global remote refrigeration products are listed on the federal GEMS (Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards) register and are eligible for rebate schemes. Being GEMS-listed confirms a model has been independently tested and meets the mandated energy performance standards for commercial refrigerated cabinets — a baseline requirement for any rebate claim.

Most commercial refrigeration should be serviced at least twice a year, though high-use environments (supermarkets, busy kitchens, cold storage) often benefit from quarterly checks. Regular servicing catches small issues like refrigerant leaks, worn seals, or failing fans before they become costly breakdowns or food safety risks.

Common warning signs include inconsistent or rising internal temperatures, unusual noises (buzzing, clicking, rattling), excessive frost or condensation build-up, higher-than-usual power bills, and doors or seals not closing properly. If you notice any of these, it’s worth getting it looked at before it fails completely.

Yes. Refrigeration failures can put stock, food safety, and compliance at risk, so we prioritise fast response for urgent breakdowns.

Yes we manage the full lifecycle, from initial system design and installation through to scheduled servicing, repairs, and eventual replacement or upgrade.

Yes, that’s the main appeal of a monobloc kit. Because the refrigeration unit is a single, pre-built module that mounts onto the panel wall, there’s no refrigerant line brazing or gas handling required on-site (this is typically all handled by a licensed refrigeration mechanic before it reaches you, or built into the unit).

Most businesses can assemble the panels and fit the monobloc unit without needing a specialist install team, though we’re always available to help if you’d prefer it professionally installed.

Remote systems make sense when you need a larger cold room, want the compressor noise and heat kept well away from the storage or work area, are planning a custom or permanent build, or want the most energy-efficient option for continuous, heavy use. Monobloc kits are better suited to smaller to mid-sized rooms, faster turnaround, and businesses wanting a simpler, more cost-effective setup without a full mechanical install.

Our standard sizes are as follows:

  • 1.8m x 1.8m x 2.2m H
  • 1.8m x 2.4m x 2.2m H
  • 2.4m x 2.4m x 2.2m H
  • 2.4m x 3.6m x 2.2m H
  • 3.6m x 3.6m x 2.2m H

However, we also have custom sizes available depending on your needs.

While the panel assembly and unit mounting are designed to be straightforward, we recommend getting the electrical connection done by a licensed electrician, and it’s worth having us check the site (flooring, power supply, ventilation, drainage) before you install to make sure everything runs efficiently from day one.
